I want to cheer again, how to convince my parents?

I was on a competitive all-star cheerleading team for the 2006-2007 season and I totally loved it. I met so many new people and had the time of my life learning new skills like jumps, stunts, and tumbling (I almost got my back handspring!). I didn't cheer this season however because I started at a new school that's a private high school and it's very expensive. This is why I had to stop cheerleading. I miss cheerleading so much and I really want to do it again. I found an all-star team in my area that some of my friends at school cheer for and it's not nearly as costly as my old team because they do so much fundraising to off-set the cost. I've been working so hard stretching and getting back in shape to cheer again. The last thing I need to do is convince my parents that I should cheer again. My mom knows how much I miss it, but my dad hates all the traveling to competitions. Cheerleading means so much to me, how do I convince my parents to let me cheer this coming 2008-2009 season?

depending on your age, you could tell dad you'll get a job to earn cash for some travel expenses, or even offer to do work around the house to earn it. if travel and cash are the proble, please realize that parents do try thier hardest to make their children happy, but sometimes it isn't always feasable, especailly financially. is there any way you could cheer for the school, non-competitively?

Cheerleading….a sport or not?

Why do so many people say that cheerleading is not sport? I mean, right from the internet dictionary, a sport is a physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

I agree, sideline cheerleading is NOT a sport (you know, the ones that cheer at the basketball or football games). But All-Star/Competitive cheerleading is definently a sport because we practice for competitions, we do hard things that require skills and hard practice (just like any other sports), and just like how I mentioned before, we go to competitions.

What's your opinion?
By the way, I've been a cheerleader for almost 6 years, and I have the reputation of being one of the nicest girls in school. I don't care about popularity or the other stuff people label us as.

I'm not a cheerleader but I do think of it as a sport. It's really hard and tough and you need to have lots of stamina, energy, confidence, and determination to do half the things they do. Middle school + high school cheerleading I don't really view as a sport…maybe just an activity. But college cheerleading (like Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders) I have respect for, and pro competition cheerleaders who have been doing it for years. It is a sport, and if someone disagrees, I'd like to seem them try it. It's not easy.

Lol, a girl fell on her head at a pep rally my school had last week. It was funny till she started shaking but she's ok now…and guess what? Someone put that ish on YouTube! Hehehe.

What's the difference between an all-star and rec cheerleading squad?

Please tell me everything I need to know about cheerleading. All the basics and stunts I have to learn. And for tryouts, do they teach you a dance and give you time to practice and perfect it?

All-star teams do not cheer at games. They exist only to compete. Some Rec teams cheer and compete. Some only cheer, and some only compete. All-star teams tend to cost a lot more, but usually you get more training for the money you pay. They also tend to be better teams overall.

Tryouts depends on the team. Ask the coach what you should expect and what skills you should have. You probably don't need to know much about stunting yet if this team takes beginners. If they teach you a dance you could have a day, 3 days, or a week to learn and perfect it. Again it depends on how the coach runs things.

Everything else you need to know about cheering (exercises and stretches, motions, jumps, cheers, dancing, stunts, and tumbling) can be found here. There are pictures and videos as well: http://aescougarcheer.com/Cheer101/basics.htm

Good luck!

does anyone have any advice or information on how to start an all star cheerleading squad?

i need info like insurance, waivers, consents, constitutions, coaching certifications, fundraising and any other info someone can offer me. thanks

Composure, presence of mind and perseverance is most needed for a cheerleader. Here are some regular Cheerleading tips to help you get there. Practice on your voice, a good cheerleading team is known to have a sharp and audible voice across the audience and the judges. Learn to smile and appear calm from the external, appear as though you are enjoying the show and this can work in your favor.

Another important Cheerleading tip is to be well dressed, dressed comfortably and neatly combed for the event. If you fail to perform a certain stunt, do not get hassled and affect the remainder of the performances. Like in gymnastics, there is a section called recovery that judges use in case a performer fails but recovers gracefully and performs the other steps well.

Do any of you have experience taking dance/cheer at multiple studios in the same season?

This year I will be doing a few things:

-All Star Cheerleading
-Tap dance
-Tap dance at another studio than the one above
-Hip hop at yet another studio

So everything I do is with a different company. I have never done this before and I’m worried that recital/competition dates and such will knock into each other and occur on the same days. I don’t want to have to lose any of these classes, so does anyone have any advice?

I personally have not had classes at multiple studios but i have had experience balancing dance with sports and other things. If all of the recitals are around the same month it may get a little hectic with extra practices, dress rehearsals, and recitals. If its possible, some of your studios may offer some of the classes you want to take? If not then just make sure you give your teachers a heads up and tell them that you attend different studios and and ask them around what date the recitals are on. If all of them are competition then have in your head that at some point something is going to overlap. If you start to feel too overwhelmed i would drop the one that you don’t like as most. Good luck!!

Cool cheerleading stunt ideas?

Hey, one of my cheerleading stunt groups is doing an All Star stunt competition thing at camp and we're trying to get some ideas together. We're really good at learning new things and we're up to trying anything crazy or awesome ways to get in or out of stunts or whatever. There's only the five of us so we need one man stunts. If anyone has any ideas or saw anything or can think up something 'cause you're awesome like that then we would love for you to share it with us and let us try it. Thank you to anyone who contributes ideas!!!

Why don't my parents support cheerleading?

Right now I take private tumbling classes for $60 and it's stunting and tumbling for about 2 hours. They think it's a waste of money, but cheer is my life! I love cheerleading it's the only sport I actually like and it makes me happy. But when they stay this stuff it makes me want to quit everything I worked hard for. It's all star cheerleading and if I were to have a competition it seems like no one but my cousins. What do you think I should do?
J*ME- Yes I do do competitive cheerleading

I can tell cheer is your life…I looked at your profile and 99% of the 400 questions you answered where on Cheer!! That is true love right there.

Your parents are probably not AGAINST Cheering per se, but against the time you put in vs what you get for it.
And you and your friends probably bug the crap out of them with all the Cheer-tivities. Do you have your friends call 50 times an hour?? Then you need your own phone.
Do your parents have to yell for you to get off the phone and do your homework?? ETC. ETC.

You will have to decide if the BIGGEST objection is
1. Time vs Benefit
2. The Hustle and bustle of activities around the house that are distracting to your parents needs
3. Money

Regardless of why they object, you need a plan to get your Parents on your side,
1. maybe find some role models to put up on your wall (as pics or a collage) of PEOPLE who are/were Cheerleaders AND (insert something awesome) like Ronald Regan, find some pics of him cheerling and being President, or Bill Gates as a cheerleader. Find a ton of sucessful people in Business, Education (like Albert Einstein) .
2. get involved in SOMETHING non-cheer related. Just to meet them halfway. like Math club or drama or ??? Maybe get a NASA grant to write a paper on space. SOMETHIng

Are you SURE that it is the SPORT you love and not the LIFESTYLE?
What will you GIVE UP to participate?
Earn your own money to start. Then save it for your own car or for college.
i bet that 60 dollar fee for the classes is nothig compared to the other things Cheering costs your parents.
Nothing will get your parents attention like paying your own way.
